While it’s true that full fast food meals including burgers and fries aren’t healthy and have too many calories, there are some fast food options out there that are better for you. Here’s a good way to look at it.
A lot of health experts these days now believe that having five or six small meals throughout the day is better for you than three large meals, and that you should never skip a meal because it makes you binge at your next meal.
Better Options to Take Fast Food
So does it become better to skip lunch because your only option is fast food, or have the healthiest fast food option available?
While you may not be able to find something super healthy at a fast food restaurant there are bound to be some moderately healthy options.
Of course you also shouldn’t walk into a fast food restaurant and ask them for a bowl of salad. There are better choices.
For example if you go for Mexican don’t have a taco salad in an edible bowl. Did you know the taco salad Taco Bell offer is actually 860 calories and 46 grams of fat? That’s not healthy at all.
Even if you take out the edible bowl it’s still 490 calories and 25 grams of fat. So don’t have that.
Have something on a corn tortilla that is made “fresco”. Fresco means that they use salsa made from tomatoes, onions, and cilantro instead of using cheese and sauce. This knocks the calories and fat way down.
In fact two grilled steak tacos done “fresco” is only 340 calories with 10 grams of fat. If you go for the ranchero chicken soft tacos it will only be 340 calories and 8 grams of fat for two.
You should be able to find these kinds of choice at any Mexican restaurant. Look for flour or corn tortillas and avoid deep fried fillings. Look for salsa instead of cheese and sour creams. Or go for low fat cheese if you really need to eat some cheese.
If you fancy eating some burgers then opt for the regular hamburger to avoid that slice of cheese. Replace fries with a side salad that comes with a light dressing. It is okay to have fries every so often though.
You’re less likely to succeed with your diet if you force yourself to avoid foods you enjoy. In that case always go for the smallest size, even if you have to order a kids meal.
Don’t forget to have a water instead of a soda. Nearly every fast food restaurant these days have bottled water. A diet soda is a good last resort.
If you avoid the toppings then you can’t go wrong with a grilled chicken sandwich. Avoid deep fried chicken sandwiches though. People tend to think that chicken sandwiches are healthy because chicken is pretty healthy. This only goes for grilled chicken. Fried chicken can never be considered healthy.
For example the grilled chicken sandwich at Wendy’s has 370 calories and 8 grams of fat. Which isn’t that bad. Especially compared to the deep fried chicken fillet sandwich which has 470 calories and 16 grams of fat.
You’ll also be surprised to learn that the mandarin chicken salad, which sounds like a much healthier option, has over 500 calories and has 26 grams of fat.
While it’s recommended to avoid fast food as much as you can, it is entirely possible to eat fast food every so often and still lose some weight.
You just need to be aware of what you are putting in to your body. When you’re aware of the nutritional information you can make the best possible choice.
